A bizarre freeway chase in Los Angeles lasted more than six hours

A chase after an armed suspect turned into a bizarre 6-hour chase down an expressway in California.

Police officers chased a suspect with a gun Tuesday night as they moved through the streets of South Los Angeles, and it turned into a chase that lasted more than six hours. The fugitive was finally caught on Interstate 10 in Ontario.

The chase began about 7:04 p.m. in response to a call about a man with a gun, LAPD said. The man drove the car at high speeds, swerved into residential areas and even drove in the oncoming lane several times. Several times the driver drove on the wrong side of the street to avoid traffic and ran a red light. During the time the driver tried to evade law enforcement, he severely damaged the wheels and body of the car.

The chase slowed dramatically after the second hour – the increase in traffic behind the chaser could be seen for miles as cars were forced to move at the slow pace set by the chase car.

At the seventh hour of the chase, the car finally broke down and the driver gave up – he opened the door and got out. His identity has not yet been released.
