A car drove into a crowd of Black Lives Matter activists in New York City

In New York, a car drove into a group of protesters, among whom were activists of the Black Lives Matter (BLM, “Black Lives Matter”) movement.

The incident happened after 16:00 on Friday, December 11 (00:00 Moscow time on Saturday), in the area of Manhattan. According to the newspaper, the car drove forward sharply, pushing protesters, and then raced through the intersection, hitting more pedestrians, including those on bicycles. Seven people were injured in the accident, some of whom were hospitalized.

A woman was driving the vehicle. She did not try to leave the scene of the accident and waited for the police officers.

As NBC News specifies, the protesters were speaking in defense of hunger-striking prisoners in a prison in New Jersey. About 40-50 people took part in the demonstration. The driver of the car that crashed into the people was detained and is currently being questioned.

The name of the movement BLM is consonant with the main slogan of the protests which engulfed dozens of American cities: their participants are fighting against systematic oppression of black residents of the USA and police brutality. The protests, which periodically escalated into pogroms and looting, began after African-American George Floyd was killed during his arrest.
