A new strain of coronavirus, called Delta Plus, has been discovered in the state of Maharashtra in India.
This was announced by Tatirao Lahan, head of the Department of Medical Education and Research, speaking on television.
Twenty cases of infection with this strain have already been identified.
The new type of coronavirus differs in that a mutation has occurred in one of the virus’s proteins, which reduces antibody activity in people who have had the disease or have been vaccinated. This means that Delta Plus is more dangerous than other strains.
According to Lahan, several cases have been identified in a port city, with no symptoms of the disease in those who became ill.
Areas where the new type of virus has been detected have been cordoned off.
