American doctors have revealed a new strain of Neisseria meningitidis that is resistant to the main drugs – ciprofloxacin and beta-lactamase.

Scientists at the Maryland Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Maryland Department of Health warn that a new, resistant strain could cause incurable brain inflammation. They suggest revising recommendations for healthcare providers and public health officials.

N meningitidis is a bacterium that causes meningitis, a sudden, life-threatening infection of the mucous membrane of the brain and spinal cord, or blood flow. In 2018, a total of 330 cases were registered, the highest rates are observed in children under the age of 1 year. A new strain may cause the growth of patients and increase mortality.
