Barbara Brewer, her husband Jeremy and children Ashley and Jacob were enjoying their second day in Florida and were strolling through Siesta Key when a thunderstorm struck. The family headed to safety – but then lightning struck.
“We were all suddenly on the ground,” Barbara recalls, “my ears were ringing. I turned to Jason and saw the hole in his T-shirt – where the lightning struck. He was lying on the ground, and foam came out of his mouth. ” The good Samaritans who came to the aid of the Buers tried to resuscitate the boy and provided first aid until the ambulance arrived – after which 14-year-old Jacob was urgently taken to the hospital.
Now he is recovering, despite serious injuries: the lightning went through the teenager’s chest and leg. While Jacob can only communicate with gestures, the Brewers do not lose heart – and the fact that the boy survived is called “a real miracle.” Barbara also warns other tourists who are not aware of the dangers of the storm. “If you see clouds gathering in the distance, you better start to pack,” emphasizes Brewer. A campaign to raise funds for medical expenses for a family has already raised more than $ 20,000.
