The USS Donald Cook is working in the region to “ensure security and stability,” the US Navy said.
A Russian warplane flew at low altitude over the US destroyer Donald Cook in the Black Sea, where the US Navy has deployed three of its ships for exercises.
The Su-24 fighter-bomber flew over the destroyer Sunday while the ship was in international waters, the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet said.
The Navy said it was operating in the Black Sea to reassure regional allies and “ensure security and stability.”
“Donald Cook” operates alongside the USS Porter and the USS Laramie, which provides refueling for the destroyers during operations.
NATO is focusing on maintaining a presence in the region, which includes the Crimean Peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014.
