Hailey Morinico, 17, didn’t hesitate to rush out to rescue her family’s dogs when she saw a large bear in her own backyard in Southern California.
The girl ran outside and pushed the bear off the fence, then quickly gathered the dogs and returned to her home in the suburb of Bradbury, east of Los Angeles. Home surveillance video captured the incident and went viral. The footage shows a bear sitting on a fence wall and trying to paw a large black dog. Two cubs can be seen behind the bear, with four other smaller dogs barking and scurrying around the yard.
Moriniko ran up to the bear and pushed with both hands, knocking the beast off the fence. Then she grabbed one of the smaller dogs and rushed back, the other dogs running off on their own. “Honestly, the only thing I was thinking about was how to protect my dogs,” Morinico later admitted. The girl got away with a couple of scratches, but she advises no one to follow her example, because bears, especially females with cubs, can be deadly.
