Archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority have found an entire chicken egg during excavations in an ancient cesspool. The egg is 1,000 years old.
Dr. Lee Perry Gal of the Israel Antiquities Authority said researchers had previously only found fragments of eggshells, as whole eggs were almost never preserved.
“Even today, eggs are rarely stored long in supermarket cartons. It’s amazing to think that this find is 1,000 years old!” – said Alla Nagorski, the excavation supervisor.
Scientists believe that the egg has been preserved because of the conditions in which it has been kept for so many years. Despite the great care with which the archaeologists extracted the egg, it is slightly cracked. At the Israel Antiquities Authority’s organic laboratory, the find was restored to its original condition.
In addition to the egg, three bone dolls were found in the cesspool, which were used as toys. How an entire egg got into the cesspool remains unknown.
