A nationwide search has begun for the mother of a 7-year-old boy found dead on a hiking trail near Las Vegas. Authorities have issued a federal wanted list for 35-year-old Samantha Moreno Rodriguez.
Police launched a nationwide search for the mother of the child whose body was found on a hiking trail last month. For weeks, police have been trying to identify the child.
Now his mother, Samantha Moreno Rodriguez, is charged with killing the boy, and an arrest warrant seeking extradition has been approved by prosecutors, police Lt. Ray Spencer said.
Officials said the boy, identified Monday as 7-year-old Liam Husted of San Jose, California, left home with his mother four days before his body was found in Nevada. The boy was last seen with his mother in a 2007 dark blue Dodge Caliber on May 24, police said.
It is unclear why investigators believe she killed the boy, and, according to Spencer, “there is nothing to indicate any prior abuse that we know of.” On Monday, the boy’s father was notified of the identification and death.
On the morning of May 28, campers found Liam’s body in Mountain Springs, a suburb of Las Vegas. Detectives believe the body had been dumped on the trail the night before.
