Police have detained former Marine Brian Riley, who opened fire at an apartment building in Florida. The detainee was 33 years old and had been a combat soldier in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Riley’s victims were a 40-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman, her three-month-old infant and her 62-year-old mother. A dog belonging to the family was killed. An 11-year-old girl was taken by helicopter to a Tampa hospital with multiple wounds.
The assailant engaged in a shootout with police who arrived on the scene, but then surrendered to authorities. However, when taken to the hospital, he attempted to steal a weapon from a police officer.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Riley admitted to using methamphetamines during his initial questioning. The detainee’s girlfriend said he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, and for the past week said he’d been receiving instructions from God.
