The Japanese press is reporting that the first case of a mutated strain of Delta has been detected in the country. The new variant of coronavirus combines two variants: Alpha and Delta.

One of the hospital patients had contracted the Navi variant. Doctors have detected L452R cells from the Delta strain as well as N501S cells similar to the N501Y mutation in the Alpha strain.

It is noted that the patient did not travel abroad (according to documents and official records), so there is reason to believe that the new N501S mutation may have originated in Japan.

Eight cases of this variant of the coronavirus are known outside Japan. Scientists still do not know the level of its contagiousness and lethality.
