Mackenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, announced her intention to transfer $2.74 billion to various organizations. She wrote on her personal blog that 286 organizations would receive help.
Scott said she personally selected the organizations along with her husband and a team of researchers and consultants. The focus was on neglected areas such as education, religious and ethnic anti-discrimination and culture.
She explained that she wanted to give away her fortune to causes that would involve changing the systems that made it possible.Scott described as unfair a situation in which the greatest wealth is concentrated in the hands of a small number of people.
Bezos’ ex-wife received $36 billion – a quarter of Amazon’s stock – as a result of her 2019 divorce settlement. The court ruling made her the 15th richest person in the United States in 2019. At the end of 2020, Scott’s fortune surpassed $60 billion thanks to the company’s stock gains.
She signed a petition of intent to give away most of the money and in 2020 transferred about six billion dollars to various organizations. The recipients then included 30 institutions of higher education, more than 40 food banks, and 380 charities.
