An American dies of an overdose every 8 minutes

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drug overdose deaths in 2019 rose to almost 71 thousand, which is a record high.

Drug overdose deaths in the United States jumped 4.8% after a slight decline in 2018 – a new record high. The CDC reports 70,980 overdose deaths last year, up from 70,699.

Experts say that every 8 minutes in the country, someone dies of an overdose. They fear the numbers could get worse next year as the situation is exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic and human isolation.
