Atlanta Police Chief resigns after officers shoot African-American

Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields resigns as Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says shooting at a restaurant that killed Rayshard Brooks did not constitute “justifiable lethal force” .

Atlanta Police Chief Erica Shields resigned less than 24 hours after an African American was killed by officers near a restaurant. “Because of my deep and unchanging love for this city and this department, I am relieving the duties of the police chief,” Shields said in a statement.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms calls for a thorough investigation into the death of 27-year-old Rainbow Brooks, who was killed in a clash with two police officers. Officers tried to arrest him after he failed the sobriety test, as a result of the shootout.

Brooks died in a hospital. One of the officers was injured. This case is another in a series of deaths of African Americans from the police, which is the cause of mass protests and riots across America.
