Three pairs of the famous Bernie Sanders mittens that made him a viral meme on the Internet are being auctioned off.
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont’s outfit caught everyone’s attention at Joe Biden’s inauguration. “I was just sitting there trying to keep warm,” he says, justifying why he wore handmade mittens to a formal event. Afterward, the detail of his costume went viral – social media users created thousands of pictures, placing the senator wearing mittens anywhere from classic movie scenes to historical photos and even Mars.
Jen Ellis, a Vermont schoolteacher who hand-stitched mittens for Sanders from recycled wool sweaters and fleece from recycled plastic bottles, tweeted that she was grateful for the abundant interest in her products, but was no longer selling them. But three days later, Ellis made three additional pairs and organized three separate auctions to sell them. “I heard your requests and am happy to let you know that today I am making some more mittens to be auctioned off for charity,” Ellis tweeted Saturday. Each auction closes Jan. 29.
