BioNTech head predicts timeframe for taking coronavirus under control

Ugur Shaheen, the head of BioNTech, which develops a vaccine against coronavirus together with Pfizer, predicted the date when the pandemic infection will be brought under control.

According to Shaheen, it will be possible to bring the pandemic under control by the end of the summer of 2021. Widespread distribution of a vaccine against coronavirus will be crucial in this process. The specialist expressed the opinion that vaccination could make a serious difference as early as next April. “Hopefully, we can introduce the vaccine very quickly. It will greatly reduce the number of hospitalizations,” he added.

To see results, however, at least 30 percent of Americans would need to be vaccinated, Shaheen stressed. Pfizer and BioNTech are confident they can deliver 1.3 billion doses of the vaccine in 2021, the specialist noted. At the same time, the possibility of delivering even more of the drug over the next year is estimated.

Earlier, Ugur Shaheen stated that the pandemic will subside by early next winter. Defeating the spread of SARS-CoV-2 will be possible through widespread use of the vaccine, which will halve the number of cases of pathogen transmission.
