Bolton criticized Trump for his inability to talk to Putin

According to a former adviser to the American president, Trump does not prepare well for negotiations with foreign leaders, and therefore is constantly in a losing situation.

Former U.S. national security adviser John Bolton criticized Donald Trump in an interview with WPTV for failing to speak on an equal footing with foreign leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to him, Trump, on the eve of important negotiations, does not listen to the recommendations of his advisers and does not read materials prepared for him. “He prefers to speak for himself, rather than listen to someone,” said Bolton.

The former presidential adviser noted that Trump in this regard loses to Putin, who always comes to negotiations, well understanding the essence of the issue and realizing what goals he wants to achieve. “If Trump finds himself with someone one-on-one, then it is always an unequal fight,” he added.

In an interview with MSNBC on the same topic, Bolton said that his experience in the KGB allows Putin to hide his emotions during negotiations. “It seems to me that he felt very calm during the conversation with Trump, because he did not see an equal interlocutor in front of him,” he said.

Bolton noted that it is actually very good when the leaders of the two countries speak face to face. “But it would be good for us to know what tasks our president sets for himself. In my opinion, Trump had no goals, ”he added.

Bolton, however, expressed doubt that during a personal conversation with Putin, Trump could cause any damage to American interests. He made such a conclusion from the president’s own remarks regarding the outcome of the conversation and conversations with the translator who was present at the meeting. “They mainly discussed Syria,” Bolton said.

A former presidential adviser noted that Trump experienced communication problems not only with Putin. In his opinion, the leader of the DPRK Kim Jong-un also took advantage of Trump’s inability to put pressure on his interlocutor, thanks to which Pyongyang received an extra two years to develop its military program.

At the same time, Bolton noted that, in his opinion, there is no fundamental difference who will win the next elections: Trump or Joe Biden. In his opinion, the victory of each of the candidates “will not make the United States safer.”

At the end of June, Bolton’s book The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir went on sale in the US. It, in particular, tells about the relationship of the current US authorities with Russia and its leader Vladimir Putin, about Washington’s military contacts with Moscow and Trump’s attitude to the situation in Ukraine.

John Bolton served as the National Security Adviser to the President of the United States from April 2018 to September 2019. He left this post after a conflict with Trump. The head of the White House then explained that he asked Bolton to leave because of disagreement with many of his proposals. Bolton himself stated that he left of his own free will.
