After the Russian ship was chased away by the American destroyer John McCain, who, according to Moscow, violated the Russian border in the Peter the Great Gulf, the threat of World War III became more acute.
The incident with “John McCain” was the second clash between the warships of Russia and the USA in 24 hours. Before that, the Russian National Defense Control Center stated that the Black Sea Fleet was watching the US destroyer Donald Cook. This was stated by British journalist Paul Withers in his article Daily Express.
The U.S. Navy called the Black Sea a crucial water route for maritime trade and stability throughout Europe. Donald Cook Commander Kelly Jones said he regularly operates in that area in cooperation with NATO allies – including Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine and Georgia.
The incident with John McCain in Peter the Great Bay became known the day before, November 24. Russian Ministry of Defense informed that large anti-submarine ship “Admiral Vinogradov” stopped violation of Russian state border by US destroyer. “Admiral Vinogradov” also warned the American ship about inadmissibility of such actions and the possibility to use ram maneuver for displacement of the violator.
The American side rejected the statement of Moscow. According to US Navy data, the ship “John McCain” was not expelled from any national territory.
