Washington is worried about China’s intentions to strengthen its economic position in Italy, said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is visiting Italy and the Vatican. His words are quoted by Interfax on September 30
“The Italian Foreign Minister and I had a long conversation about the US concern about the Chinese Communist Party’s attempts to use economic leverage in Italy for its own strategic interests,” Pompeo said.
He demanded that the Italian government “carefully assess the risks to national security and privacy of fellow citizens from technology companies associated with the Chinese Communist Party.”
The Italian Foreign Minister said in response that Rome is fully committed to its Western partners and understands the US position.
He emphasized that this also concerns the issue of deploying mobile networks using 5G technology. The United States is trying to keep the Chinese company Huawei out of these high-tech projects.
Earlier in March, Di Maio signed a memorandum of understanding with the chairman of the PRC State Committee for Development and Reforms, He Lifeng, within the framework of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
They talked about cooperation within the framework of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative.
Italy remains the most economically powerful country in the West to join this project.
