Two adult drivers and seven children were killed in a horrific crash on New Year’s Day, authorities say.
According to the California Highway Patrol, children and adults were killed in a head-on collision between an SUV and a pickup truck in central California on the first day of 2021.
The children, who ranged in age from 6 to 15, were from two related families traveling in a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup when a Dodge Journey crashed into them between Avenal and Coalinga around 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1.
Evidence from the scene showed that the Dodge, driven by a 28-year-old man, was traveling southbound on the highway, then swerved onto a dirt shoulder for an unknown reason, police said. The driver tried to slow down and swerved into the oncoming lane, where he hit a Ford driven by a woman. All passengers in the Ford and both drivers died at the scene.
