Catholic Diocese of New York files for bankruptcy

The New York Catholic Diocese filed for bankruptcy over clergy abuse lawsuits. This is the largest structure that went bankrupt as a result of scandals within the church.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo accuses Catholic bishops of covering up sexual assault. The diocese is now trying to defend itself against a wave of past chapter 11 clerical sexual assault lawsuits. It is the eighth largest diocese or in the United States, serving more than 1.4 million Catholics on Long Island.

“The financial burden of the litigation has become heavy and only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our goal is to provide fair and equal compensation to all survivors of sexual abuse, but we have suffered too much from this, ”said Bishop John Barres, spiritual leader of the diocese.

Barres said more than 200 cases of sexual assault by clerics have been filed against the diocese since the passage of the 2019 Child Victim Act in New York, which suspended the statute of limitations for such crimes.
