China has threatened the United States with retaliation

Beijing has been tough on possible American sanctions

China has threatened to retaliate if the U.S. Congress passes sanctions against Beijing for its alleged responsibility in the emergence of a new coronavirus epidemic, AFP reports.

“We are firmly opposed to this bill, and we will retaliate,” if it is adopted, a representative of the Chinese parliament told reporters.

In Washington, senators from the Republican Party submitted a bill in mid-May granting President Donald Trump the right to declare sanctions against China if it fails to submit a “full report” on the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Trump administration accuses the Chinese authorities of having warned the world late about the epidemic and concealed its scope.

Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo openly suspect that Beijing covered up an incident involving a virus leak in Wuhan’s biological laboratory. In response, Beijing accuses Washington of trying to make a scapegoat out of it.
