China warns that UK “interference” in Hong Kong’s affairs will lead to “reverse effects”

Chinese authorities urge Great Britain to stop meddling in Hong Kong.

“We offer the Kingdom of Great Britain to move away from the edge of the abyss, abandon the principles of the Cold War and colonial rule, as well as recognize and respect the fact that Hong Kong has returned to China,” the representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said at a briefing.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said London should “immediately stop interfering in both Hong Kong’s affairs and China’s domestic policy; otherwise, it will no doubt have undesirable consequences. ”

Beijing has announced plans to introduce a strict national security law.

China declares that such a law — without the approval of Hong Kong’s legislature — is vital in the fight against “terrorism” and “separatism” in a city where there is a turbulent environment, which is reasonable in these circumstances to be considered a direct threat to national security.

But opponents of such a development of events, including in many Western countries, express some fears that this could lead to strong political pressure. As you know, Hong Kong is a former British colony, which, after being transferred to China from the British Empire in 1997, was guaranteed freedom and autonomy for the next 50 years.

Currently, approximately 350,000 Hong Kong residents hold British passports, which allows them to stay in the UK for up to six months without a visa.

The authorities of the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom later issued a joint statement in which, inter alia, expressed serious concern about Beijing’s decision to extend national security legislation to Hong Kong.
