Robert O’Brien, national security advisor to Trump, said China’s response to the coronavirus was similar to how Soviet authorities tried to hide Chernobyl.
O’Brien compared China’s response to a new virus outbreak with that of the Soviet Union during the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. “It was a virus released by China. But they were hiding it as if they were going to make it a series for the IEE – the consequences of the virus were silenced, just as they were hiding Chernobyl in the past,” O`Brien told CBS.
O`Brien was referring to the 2019 mini-series, which showed the history of a nuclear reactor explosion in Ukraine in 1986 and the reaction of Soviet officials. He noted that the Chinese authorities concealed the scale of the pandemic in Wuhan, “expelled all reporters” and did not allow foreign experts to get to the site of the outbreak.
U.S. authorities are pushing the World Health Organization to begin independent analysis of the international response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
