In Birmingham, Alabama, a “large and extremely dangerous tornado” caused significant damage. A church, a hotel, and other buildings were severely damaged.
The tornado, described by the National Weather Service as large and dangerous, caused damage throughout Jefferson County and surrounding areas, especially in Birmingham. WVTM video shows the Hampton Inn in Fultondale, which is located in a Birmingham suburb, was badly damaged after the storm. Guests staying at the hotel were able to leave the building and take shelter in a nearby restaurant when a new line of tornadoes struck.
In Center Point, the back half of the roof of the Hilldale Baptist Church was completely blown off, and part of the city’s recreation center building was also damaged.
Initial reports indicated the tornado was moving east at 50 miles per hour. No injuries were reported at this time.
