The data of 533 million Facebook accounts was published on an online hacker forum as a result of a leak that occurred back in 2019. The forum disclosed phone numbers and email addresses.
According to Alon Gal, CTO of cybercrime company Hudson Rock, the data was leaked for free. About 4 million Israelis were affected by the leak, he said. Alon Gal called it “Facebook’s negligence” and condemned what happened.
According to the Business Insider report, some of the leaked data turned out to still be relevant because the phones were tied to valid Facebook accounts.
However, the company said that all reports of the leak were outdated: “This is old data that was previously reported in 2019. We discovered and fixed this problem in August 2019.”
Alon Gal noted that attackers could still use the disclosed information for fraud.
