Deputy filed for divorce because of his wife's decision to join another party

Indian MP and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party Saumitra Khan has filed for divorce from his wife Sujata Mondal Khan because of her decision to leave for the rival party Trinamool Congress (national party).

The woman announced her decision at a press conference in Kolkata. She said she was leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party because of the lack of respect shown to her there, and also because of corruption: party leaders bribed opponents from rival alliances by promising them money in exchange for loyalty.

Hours later, at another hastily called press conference, the 40-year-old Khan announced his decision to file for divorce. Local reporters note that the meeting was dramatic, with the politician barely holding back tears as he recounted the breakup of his 10-year relationship with his wife.

“Please refrain from using my last name in the future. Please do not call yourself Saumitra Khan’s wife. I give you full freedom to determine your political destiny,” the lawmaker said, referring to his wife. Khan then accused the Trinamool Congress of stealing his love.

The conflict between the spouses occurred amid preparations for elections in the state of West Bengal. The main power struggle is between the Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party.
