Actor Elliot Page, formerly known as actress Ellen Page from “Inception,” has become the first trans man to appear on the cover of Time magazine.
The 34-year-old performer will appear on the front page of the next issue of the magazine under the headline, “I am totally who I am.” This is Page’s first major interview since coming out about his gender identity in December. Speaking with Time reporter Katie Steinmetz, he described the mixed reaction to the announcement, made via Instagram, in which he revealed his pronouns as “he” and “they.”
“I was expecting a lot of support and love, but I was also bombarded with a huge wave of hate and transphobia,” Page said.
The actor, who received an Oscar nomination for his role in “Juno,” also talked about his childhood, saying he “felt like a boy” from a young age. He recalled the “feeling of triumph” when he was allowed to cut his hair short at age 9. Page, who previously admitted to being homosexual in 2014, also talked about undergoing surgery, which he called “completely changed my life.” He continues to discuss the fight for trans equality, as well as against the entertainment industry’s “crushing standards” and “pervasive stereotypes about masculinity and femininity.”
