Whiskey Johnnie Walker, which has been sold in the United States for 200 years, will soon be produced in paper bottles.
Diageo, the brand-owned beverage maker, said it plans to test new green packaging next year. Although most Johnnie Walker is sold in glass bottles, the company is looking for ways to use less plastic. Making glass bottles also consumes energy and creates carbon emissions.
For the production of bottles Diageo will create Pulpex, which will also produce packaging for brands such as Unilever and PepsiCo.
A paper bottle for whiskey will be tested in the spring of 2021, it will be made from wood pulp. The packaging will be fully recyclable, the company said – customers will be able to send them directly to processing plants.
