The Pasco County Rescue Squad spent several hours putting out a large fire at a farm in Dade City. Three structures with 250,000 chickens burned as a result.
Officials say an employee living on the premises of Cal-Maine Foods, located at 41040 Simpson Farm Lane in Dade City, called rescue workers around 1 a.m. The fire quickly destroyed three barns, each housing up to 80,000 chickens, and officials said at least 250,000 birds were burned.
This part of Pasco County is rural and there are no hydrants nearby, making it difficult to put out the fire, which exploded several propane tanks. Firefighters had to use tankers to transfer water from three miles away.
Cal-Maine Foods is a producer of fresh eggs. The company accounts for about a quarter of U.S. egg production.
The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time.
