As part of the fight against misinformation, Google is introducing conspiracy theories related to the coronavirus for any advertising, including that it was specially bred in a laboratory by humans.
Google is stepping up its fight against cheating and misinformation around the pandemic. The search engine will ban ads that “contradict the authoritative scientific consensus” regarding the outbreak.
This means that websites and apps can no longer make money from ads promoting COVID-19 conspiracy theories. These include claims that the virus was created in a Chinese laboratory, that the pandemic is a hoax, and Bill Gates is behind it all.
According to Bloomberg, Google will begin enforcing the new rule next month. And in addition to blocking advertisers from creating new ads, the search engine will also use human and bot reviewers to search and take action against publishers and advertisers who violate the rule.
