According to the Miami Herald, the assassins of the president of Haiti who attacked his home shouted that they were from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
A video of the incident shows someone with an American accent yelling into a loudspeaker, “Operation DEA! Everybody freeze! Operation DEA! Everybody stand up, stand up!”
Haitian authorities have already said the perpetrators were not affiliated with the agency. Unnamed government officials have called them “mercenaries” in the press.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the U.S. is monitoring the situation after “this tragic attack.”
At the same time, the Colombian president called on the Organization of American States to send an urgent mission to Haiti to “protect democratic order.”
“We reject the heinous assassination of President Jovenel Moise of Haiti. It is a cowardly act full of barbarism against the entire people of Haiti,” said Colombian President Ivan Duque.
