“Hiccups 24 hours a day,” Brazil’s president hospitalized

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been hospitalized for chronic hiccups, his office said. The head of state went to a military hospital in Brasilia, where medics must determine the cause of the ailment.

He is expected to stay under medical supervision for 24 to 48 hours, but not necessarily at the hospital itself.

Jair Bolsonaro publicly complained of hiccups last week when he underwent dental surgery.

“It has happened to me before, maybe because of the medicine I take, I hiccup 24 hours a day,” he said on the radio.

The media initially reported the hospitalization “for unknown reasons,” and because of abdominal pain. Recall that Jair Bolsonaro’s health suffered because of an incident during the 2018 elections, when he was stabbed in the stomach.
