A huge American flag and several smaller flags were stolen from a Southern California veterans’ cemetery over Memorial Day weekend, local officials said.
Les Melnyk, a spokesman for the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery, said the Garrison flag at the National Cemetery in Los Angeles was stolen late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
Veterans Affairs police are investigating the theft of the 7.6-by-9.1-foot flag, Melnick said.
Rebecca Adams, a volunteer with the Los Angeles National Cemetery Foundation, believes the kidnapper was not alone because it is difficult to remove a flag that is usually held by three people. “It’s so sad and shocking that something like this could have happened on Memorial Day,” Adams said. m
