In the American state of Florida it was decided to fight the invasion of the dark tiger python in an ancient and proven way – by eating the enemy.
The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Department of Health are studying the possibility of allowing pythons to be eaten. The python meat should be tested for mercury levels beforehand to make sure the snakes are safe.
Pythons have been introduced into the state since the 1980s and pose a threat to local wildlife, according to experts. Florida has even launched a program to capture and eradicate pythons.
Donna Kalil is the first female hunter to catch 473 pythons. After testing the python for mercury levels, she consumes the snakes’ white meat for food, noting that jerky pythons are especially good.
