Inmates in India refused parole because of COVID

In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, more than 20 prisoners refused to take advantage of parole because of the raging coronavirus pandemic in the country.

They said prison is much safer because they have regular medical checkups and timely feedings, while in freedom “you have to fight to make a living.”

Anand Kumar, head of India’s prison system, said the prisoners had conveyed their wishes in writing, as they should, so their position should be “accepted and respected.
