Disturbed circadian rhythms were found to be associated with the development of Parkinson’s disease at a more mature age.

Researchers evaluated the effects of a 24-hour biological clock on the appearance of neurodegenerative risks for the brain. According to a new study conducted by scientists from the University of California at San Francisco, almost all patients with Parkinson’s disease had irregular circadian rhythms that indicate sleep and wakefulness.

These circadian disorders can reflect the processes of neurodegenerative diseases that already affect the internal clock of the brain long before a diagnosis is made. “The strength of circadian rhythm activity seems to have a really important effect on health and disease, especially during aging. Even small changes in sleep and wakefulness patterns in older people show a high likelihood of Parkinson’s disease, ”says lead author Kristine Yaffe.
