Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed a telephone conversation between the leaders of the UN nuclear five in the near future, Reuters reports citing a statement by the US State Department.
It is noted that Pompeo and Lavrov talked about the imminent meeting of the leaders of the UN “nuclear five” on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
In addition, the US representative touched upon the issue of safe elections and the situation in Afghanistan.
The Nuclear Weapons Treaty (START-3) was signed by Russia and the United States in 2010. It involves the reduction by both sides of their strategic offensive arms. The contract was concluded for a period of ten years. The agreement can be extended for no more than five years. However, despite the approaching expiration of the treaty, US intentions in this regard are vague.
