The Chinese government says the radiation levels near its Taishan nuclear power plant are within normal limits.
The statement comes in response to media reports of a leak that is being investigated in the United States. The French company that designed the plant is also investigating the leak.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a briefing that the plant is fully compliant and there are no deviations from norms.
“So far, Chinese nuclear power plants have maintained good operational performance, with no incidents affecting the environment or public health,” he said.
Earlier, the French company Framatome reported to the U.S. Department of Energy about a gas leak from the Taishan nuclear power plant that could lead to a “radiological threat.”
