Police arrested Rio de Janeiro Mayor Marcelo Crivella over suspicions of corruption.
Law enforcement officers took the mayor from his home days before his term in office ended — he lost an election to one of his predecessors a few weeks ago.
“This is political harassment. No one fights corruption more than the government,” Crivella told reporters who observed his detention.
Two of his advisers were reportedly arrested along with the mayor. The case in which they are suspected involves schemes to take bribes from businessmen.
Crivella, a former gospel singer and evangelical pastor, is known as a conservative and radical opponent of sexual minorities. He was supported in the re-election by the head of the country, Jair Bolsonaro, who even starred in a video in his support. The video shows both politicians dancing at a mass meeting with supporters.
