German Chancellor Angela Merkel called US extraterritorial sanctions against the Nord Stream-2 pipeline inappropriate.
“We need to consider the whole [situation], talk to each other, whether there is a desire to trade gas with Russia at all, what dependence will be recognized … I consider these extraterritorial sanctions in any case a means, which is inappropriate,” the politician said.
The U.S. imposed new sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline under construction on January 19. They affected the Fortuna pipelayer, its owner – KVT-Rus – and the company Rustanker. The vessel “Maksim Gorky” also fell under restrictive measures.
The “Nord Stream-2” was planned to be put into operation at the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021. At present, we are talking about the summer of 2021. On January 19, for the first time during the fight against the pipeline, Washington implemented a threat and imposed sanctions against the project. However, Berlin continues to insist that Nord Stream 2 is an exclusively economic project.
