Metropolitan appointment sparked conflict between Serbia and Montenegro

Mass demonstrations are taking place in Montenegro against the enthronement of Metropolitan Ioannikije of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Hundreds of people broke through police cordons and began erecting barricades in the streets of the city of Cetin.

President Milo Djukanovic promises to join the demonstrators, who chanted “Long live Montenegro” and “This is not Serbia.” Earlier, he said that with the help of the SPS, Serbia was trying to bring Montenegro back under its rule.

This is how the supporters of independence perceived the intention of Patriarch Porfiri to participate in the enthronement. The Serbian Orthodox Church, in a bid to ease tensions, cancelled a prayer service for his enthronement. A pro-independence demonstration will be held at the same site.
