Many statues of the Confederation, which some consider racist symbols of the dark legacy of slavery in America, are tidied up everywhere. Among such unacceptable symbols were also monuments to the discoverer of the continent – Christopher Columbus.
The statues of Christopher Columbus, another controversial figure in US history, are removed by protesters on their own. One in Virginia was drowned in a lake; another in Boston was beaten off. In Minnesota, where a wave of protests began after the death of African-American George Floyd, a statue of Columbus was thrown to the ground.
Columbus has long been a controversial figure in US history due to abuse of indigenous communities and forced colonization at the cost of their lives.
In recent years, many cities and states have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Day in recognition of the pain and terror that the colonialists brought.
