The frequency of heart failure in New Yorkers has tripled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic than in the same period a year earlier, the researchers say. More and more people in quarantine die from a heart attack at home, fearing to go to hospitals because of the coronavirus.
The findings of doctors at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention underscore the importance of seeking emergency care during a pandemic, while the number of visits to the emergency room decreased by 23% for patients with heart attack and 20% with stroke.
Since March, 3989 New Yorkers have had heart failure at home, last year the number of such patients was 1336.
