This happened against the backdrop of several criminal cases of industrial and technological espionage.
More than 1,000 Chinese researchers have left the United States amid an active fight against technology theft, according to senior U.S. security sources.
According to one source, Chinese agents are already targeting the future Biden administration.
The researchers left the country when the DOJ opened several criminal cases against Chinese agents on suspicion of industrial and technological espionage, Aspen Institute think tanker John Demers, head of the Justice Department’s Homeland Security Division, said at an event.
According to a MOJ spokesman, the researchers, who are suspected of having ties to the People’s Liberation Army of China, fled the country after the FBI interrogated 20 cities and the State Department closed the Chinese consulate in Houston in July.
Chief of Counterintelligence Office of the U.S. National Intelligence Director William Evanina, speaking at the same event, said that the future administration of President-elect Joe Biden and people close to his team have already been targeted by Chinese agents.
He did not specify any additional details.
