On Saturday, a funeral was held for a Canadian Muslim family that was hit to death by a pickup truck.
Several hundred people came to bid farewell to the victims of the hate crime. Four coffins were draped in Canadian flags. Before the ceremony, they drove into the grounds of the Islamic Centre in southwestern Ontario.
Nathaniel Weltman, 20, drove his pickup truck over the family as all four were walking near their home. The fifth family member, a 9-year-old boy, survived. He is still being treated in the hospital. According to the police version, the family was deliberately killed because of its religion.
“And the very fact that their coffins are draped in a beautiful Canadian flag shows that the entire Canadian nation stands with them,” commented Raza Bashir Tarar, Pakistan’s high commissioner to Canada.
It is specified that the entire family moved to Canada from Pakistan about 14 years ago. The murder sparked outrage across the country. Weltman faces four charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the family’s murder a terrorist attack and promised to suppress far-right groups and hatred on the Internet.
