NASA has released a list of potential astronauts for the Artemis mission to the moon. The group of 18 candidates included both veterans and newcomers.
Eight astronauts from the class of 2017, including U.S. Navy Captain Kayla Barron, Navy SEAL and physician Johnny Kim and Curiosity science team member Jessica Watkins could become the first woman to set foot on the moon. Former ISS residents Christina Koch and Crew Dragon pilot Victor Glover are also on the list.
The agency has not yet determined the exact list of Artemis mission pilots; many of these astronauts may end up in support roles. They will work with companies developing lunar landing devices, determine training, set equipment requirements and advise on technical issues. They will also become public spokespersons for the Artemis program.
