According to a CBS News-YouGov poll released Wednesday, 74% of Americans believe there will be more incidents of violence in Washington, D.C., next week as the city prepares for the inauguration of Democrat Joe Biden.
An overwhelming 92% of Biden voters say violence in D.C. is likely. About 49% of President Trump supporters and 72% of independents also expect another riot.
The poll comes a week after a mob of pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol to disrupt congressional confirmation of the electoral college vote and Biden’s victory. The rioting left five people dead, including a Capitol police officer and a woman shot by another plainclothes officer. In the poll, 87 percent of respondents said they disapproved of last week’s violence, although there is disagreement about Trump’s role in it.
A total of 59 percent of respondents thought the president encouraged violence at the Capitol, about 31 percent said he had no impact, and only 10 percent thought he prevented violence. A total of 90% of Democrats, 58% of independents and 23% of Republicans think Trump has encouraged violence.
