Pompeo discusses energy security with Danish Prime Minister

Earlier, the US Secretary of State warned the company against helping Russia to complete the construction of the pipeline.

Secretary of State Pompeo held talks with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen on Wednesday. The issues of energy security, cooperation in the Arctic, the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on international cooperation, as well as relations with China were discussed, the State Department reports.

Earlier in the press it was reported that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo intends to discuss with the head of the Danish government the situation with the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

The gas pipeline, which Russia is seeking to complete, will deliver gas to Europe along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The unfinished section of the gas pipeline runs through the Danish economic zone.

Last week, Pompeo warned companies against helping Russia complete the nearly $ 11 billion pipeline on the grounds that he would strengthen the Kremlin’s grip on Europe’s energy market and punish Ukraine, which is battling Russian-backed separatists in the east of the country.

The pipeline will seriously impact natural gas flows by diverting them around Ukraine, depriving Kiev of billions of dollars in transit fees annually.
