Pompeo says U.S. may review Hong Kong status

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the United States may reconsider the status of Hong Kong if its autonomy is affected, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the US Department of State.

According to Pompeo, any decision that would infringe on Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms guaranteed by the Joint Sino-British Declaration and constitutional law will inevitably affect the assessment of the principle of “one country, two systems” and the status of this territory.

The Secretary of State also noted that the United States condemns the inclusion in the agenda of the National People’s Congress of China of Hong Kong’s national security bill. According to Pompeo, this is a “harbinger of death” of the autonomy of this territory.

Pompeo added that the US is urging Beijing “to respect Hong Kong’s broad autonomy, democratic institutions and civil liberties.” He stressed that this is what plays a decisive role in maintaining the special status of this region.
